Chrysler to match ‘cash for clunkers’ incentive

To the people that keep asking about requirements of the program, please read here:

http://www.cars.gov/

How do I know if my car or truck is an eligible trade-in vehicle under the CARS program?

There are several requirements (but you also have to meet certain conditions for the car or truck you wish to buy). Your dealer can help you determine whether you have an eligible trade in vehicle.

Your trade-in vehicle must

have been manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in
have a “new” combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less
be in drivable condition
be continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in
The trade-in vehicle must have been manufactured not earlier than 25 years before the date of trade in and, in the case of a category 3 vehicle, must also have been manufactured not later than model year 2001
Note that work trucks (i.e., very large pickup trucks and cargo vans) have different requirements.

Check your vehicle mpg :
The official place to check would be www.fueleconomy.gov. It offers a comparison tool as well so you can see if the new car you are buying would get you $0, $3500, or $4500.

I heard it on NPR this morning and looked it up. It’s supposed to start tomorrow and figure if you’re in the market for a new car like me, it’s very tempting to consider them. Please do not flame here if you do not agree with the Cash for Clunker program or if you do not qualify (I found out my COMBINED do not, but my city mpg would have). This is for those looking to maximize their “cash for clunker” trade-in to consider a Chrysler vehicle considering they just emerged from bankruptcy as well. Good luck to all!

    Link to info: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Chr…5.html?x=0

    Brief excerpt from the article:

Car shoppers get a voucher worth $3,500 if they trade in a vehicle getting 18 mpg or less for one getting at least 22 mpg. The voucher grows to $4,500 if the new car’s mileage is 10 mpg higher than the old vehicle.

Owners of sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks or minivans getting 18 mpg or less could receive a voucher for $3,500 if their new truck or SUV got at least 2 mpg higher than their old vehicle. The voucher would increase to $4,500 if the mileage of the new truck or SUV was at least 5 mpg higher than the older vehicle.

That means some consumers could, in theory, get up to $9,000 off a new Chrysler vehicle if they trade in and buy the right combination of vehicles. According to the auto Web site Edmunds.com, 16 Chrysler vehicles are fuel efficient enough to qualify a shopper for a tax rebate under cash for clunkers, so long as the trade-in vehicle qualifies as well.

You can go here to find out what the official government rating of COMBINED mpg is for your car: http://fueleconomy.gov/
